Etymology
Romanian plasă entered the language from South Slavic, most directly Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian plasa, both meaning net or mesh. The word spread through the Balkans as everyday vocabulary for woven or knotted netting, used for fishing, carrying goods, and later for wire mesh. Romanian kept the core sense of a net or meshwork and extended it to sports equipment and, historically, to a subdivision of local administration.
