Etymology
Mere is the plural of măr, from Latin mālum, meaning apple. Latin itself borrowed the word from Greek mēlon, and the ultimate source before that is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European root. The Romanian plural form mere adds the neuter plural ending -e to the root măr-.
