Etymology

Di continues the Latin preposition de through normal Romanian sound change. In the Moldavian dialect region, an unstressed final -e commonly raises to -i, so de becomes di in everyday speech. The form carries the same meaning and grammar as standard de. It is best known from literature that renders Moldavian speech, most famously the prose of Ion Creangă.
