Etymology

Romanian borrowed "clinic" from French "clinique" in the nineteenth century, as part of a wave of medical and scientific vocabulary. The French word traces to Greek "klinikos", meaning relating to a bed, from "klinē" (bed), the couch on which a physician examined a patient. The underlying sense is bedside medicine, direct observation of the patient rather than theory.
