Etymology

Romanian borrowed diplomă from French diplôme in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian's formal vocabulary. French diplôme traces to Latin diploma, a borrowing of Greek díplōma, meaning a folded document or official paper. The Greek word comes from diploun, to fold, itself from diplous, double.
