Etymology

Profită comes from the verb a profita, which Romanian borrowed from French profiter in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French-influenced modernization of the Romanian lexicon. French profiter itself traces to Latin profectus, the noun of progress or advance, tied to the verb proficere, meaning to advance or to be useful. Proficere is built from pro- (forward, for) plus facere (to do, to make).
