Etymology

Romanian borrowed "direct" from French "direct", which itself comes from Latin "directus", the past participle of "dirigere" (to arrange in a line, to guide straight). "Dirigere" combines the prefix "dis-" (apart, in different directions) with "regere" (to guide, to rule, to keep straight). The underlying sense is of something set on a straight, unbroken course.
