Etymology
Distanță comes from French distance, itself from Latin distantia, the noun form of distans, present participle of distare, to stand apart. The Latin verb combines the prefix dis- (apart) with stare (to stand). Romanian borrowed the word during its modern period of relatinization, alongside many French-derived scientific and abstract terms.
