Etymology
Pește descends from Latin piscis, meaning fish, through the ordinary sound changes of Vulgar Latin as it developed into Romanian. The same Latin root gave Italian pesce, French poisson, and Spanish pez. Latin piscis itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European word for fish, which through a different branch also produced the English word fish.
