Comun entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French commun and Latin communis, part of the wave of Western Romance vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. It sits alongside older, inherited Latin words rather than descending directly from spoken Latin. Communis itself splits into com- ('together') and munis ('performing a service'), from the same base as munus ('duty, gift'). That base traces to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to exchange or share out.
