Etymology
Comunitate is a 19th-century neologism, borrowed into Romanian from French communauté during the modernization of the language and its shift toward Romance vocabulary. It ultimately traces to Latin communitas, communitatis, itself built from communis, meaning shared or common. The suffix -itate is the Romanian reflex of Latin -itas, the same ending seen in libertate and unitate.
