Etymology

Neapărat is built from the negative prefix ne- and apărat, the past participle of a apăra. Today a apăra means "to defend," but in older Romanian it also carried the sense "to ward off" or "to prevent." So neapărat literally meant "not able to be warded off," that is, unavoidable, and from there it shifted to mean "necessarily" or "without fail." A apăra itself descends from Latin apparare, "to prepare, make ready."
