Etymology

Romanian "țintă" is generally traced to a Hungarian source, "cinte", which originally denoted a metal stud or nail head, of the kind hammered into the center of a shield or board. The sense narrowed over time from the physical stud itself to the marked center one aims at, and then widened again to abstract goals and objectives. It shares this Hungarian root with the verb "țintui", meaning to nail or pin something down.
