Etymology
Dorit is the past participle of the verb a dori, meaning to wish or to desire. That verb was formed by adding a verbal suffix to the noun dor, which denotes a deep longing or ache of the heart. Dor is generally traced to Latin dolere, to suffer or grieve, the same root that gave the Romance family of words for pain and sorrow. Over centuries the Romanian sense softened from pain toward bittersweet yearning, and dorit came to mean simply what is wished for.
