Etymology
Romanian borrowed "simptom" from French "symptôme", which itself came from Latin "symptoma" and ultimately Greek "sýmptōma". The Greek word meant a chance occurrence or a coincidence, built from "syn-" (together) and "píptein" (to fall). Over time it narrowed to mean a bodily sign that accompanies an illness.
