Etymology
Duh entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic duхъ, meaning breath or spirit, during the centuries when Slavonic served as the liturgical and administrative language in the Romanian lands. The word settled mainly in religious and folk vocabulary, most visibly in Duhul Sfânt, the Holy Spirit. The Slavic root goes back to a Proto-Indo-European base meaning to breathe or blow, the same idea that ties breath to soul in many languages.
