Etymology
Limită entered Romanian as a learned borrowing from French limite during the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars reshaped the vocabulary along Western Romance lines. It traces back to Latin limes, limitis, a word for a boundary path or frontier strip. Unlike words inherited directly from spoken Latin, it was adopted deliberately as part of that modernization. The form limita is just limită with the enclitic definite article -a attached, giving the literal sense of the limit.
