Etymology

Durere descends from Latin dolere, meaning to feel pain or to grieve. The same Latin verb gave Romanian its verb a durea, to hurt, and durere was formed by adding the noun-forming suffix -re to that verb stem. The change from Latin dolere to Romanian durere follows a regular Romanian sound shift in which an l between vowels became r, the same process seen in soare (sun) from Latin sol.
