Etymology

Eliberare is the verbal noun of a elibera, "to free or release", a 19th-century Romanian borrowing modeled on French libérer and ultimately from Latin liberare, "to set free". Latin liberare derives from liber, "free". Romanian formed the noun by keeping the verb's infinitive ending -re, a normal way to turn a verb into an abstract noun in Romanian.
