Confortabil entered Romanian in the nineteenth century through French confortable, part of a wave of Western Romance borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. French confortable itself goes back to Latin confortare, to strengthen greatly, built from the intensive prefix com- and fortis, strong. The sense shifted over time from physical strengthening to the modern idea of ease and well-being.
