Etymology
Ținta is the definite form of țintă, a feminine noun of disputed origin. Most Romanian dictionaries trace it to a Hungarian source related to a word for a metal stud or nail head, since old targets and shield bosses were marked with a nail or stud at the center. Over time the word shifted from naming the physical marker to naming the point being aimed at, and later to abstract goals. Because the borrowing path is debated, no reliable Indo-European root can be given.
