Etymology
Epocă entered Romanian from French époque, which came from Late Latin epocha. The Latin word was borrowed from Greek epokhē, meaning a stopping point or fixed point in time, from epi- (upon) plus ekhein (to hold). The core sense was a fixed reference point from which time is reckoned, later widening to mean a distinct period of history.
