Contesă entered Romanian from French comtesse, the feminine form of comte (count). Comte itself descends from Latin comes, comitis, meaning companion or attendant, a term that Roman emperors later used as a title for court officials and provincial governors. Romanian adapted the borrowed word with its native feminine noun ending -ă in place of the French -esse.
