Etymology

Romanian borrowed "institut" from French "institut" in the nineteenth century, as part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French took it from Latin "institutum", meaning something established or set up, the past participle of "instituere" (to set up, to establish). That verb combines "in-" (into, toward) with "statuere" (to set, to station), itself tied to "stare" (to stand).
