Etymology
Evreu comes from Late Latin hebraeus, which itself comes from Greek Hebraios, tracing back to the Hebrew term ʿIvri. Romanian likely inherited the word through Church Slavonic, which was the liturgical language of the medieval Romanian principalities and carried many biblical terms from Greek into Romanian. The masculine ending -u marks it as a regular Romanian noun once it settled into the language.
