Etymology
"Sărut" and the verb "a săruta" come from Latin "salutare", which meant to greet or to wish someone health. In most Romance languages that verb kept the sense of greeting, as in Italian "salutare" or Spanish "saludar". Romanian narrowed the meaning to "kiss", likely because greeting a close person with a kiss was once a common custom. The old sense survives in the fixed Romanian greeting "Sărut mâna", literally "I kiss your hand".
