Etymology
Romanian borrowed "stupid" from French "stupide" during the nineteenth century, when scholars replaced many Slavic-derived words with Latin and French ones to align Romanian with its Romance roots. The French word itself descends from Latin "stupidus", meaning stunned or numbed with amazement. The underlying Latin verb "stupere" meant to be stunned or dazed, a sense that later narrowed to mean mentally dull.
