Etymology
The word comes from Latin "exspirare" (also spelled "expirare"), built from "ex-" (out) and "spirare" (to breathe). The original sense was literally to breathe out, and it later widened to mean to die or, in modern usage, to become invalid at the end of a set period. Romanian inherited both the literal breathing sense and the figurative one for deadlines and documents.
