Romanian "vampiră" is the feminine counterpart of "vampir," borrowed in the 18th-19th century through French "vampire" and German "Vampir." Those Western European forms trace back to Serbian "вампир" (vampir), which spread across European languages after reports of alleged vampire cases in the Balkans in the early 1700s. The deeper origin of the Slavic word is disputed and not securely reconstructed, so no Proto-Indo-European root can be given with confidence.
