Etymology
Romanian borrowed "vampir" in the modern era from French "vampire" and German "Vampir", part of the wave of Western European vocabulary that entered Romanian in the 19th century. Those Western forms trace back to Serbian "вампир" (vampir), which spread across Europe in the early 1700s after reports of alleged vampire cases in the Balkans. The word's deeper origin within Slavic is disputed among linguists, so no single root is settled. Ironically, the older native Romanian term for a similar folk figure is "strigoi", not "vampir".
