Etymology
Romanian borrowed "secretar" from French "secrétaire" in the 19th century, during the wave of Romance relatinization of the language. The French word goes back to Latin "secretarius", a person entrusted with private or confidential matters, itself built on "secretus", meaning hidden or set apart. "Secretus" is the past participle of "secernere", to separate, from "se-" (apart) plus "cernere" (to sift, distinguish).
