Etymology

Trandafir entered Romanian from Byzantine Greek τριαντάφυλλο (triantafyllo), a compound meaning roughly "thirty-leaved," used for the many-petaled cultivated rose. The word likely reached Romanian through Balkan intermediaries, notably Bulgarian трендафил (trendafil), rather than directly from Greek. Romanian also uses the Latin-derived roză for the flower and its color, so the two terms now sit side by side with slightly different registers.
