Etymology
Hal came into Romanian from Ottoman Turkish hâl, meaning state or condition. The Turkish word itself goes back to Arabic حال (ḥāl), with the same meaning. It entered Romanian during the long period of Ottoman political and cultural contact in the Balkans, alongside many other everyday Turkish loanwords. In Romanian it kept its core sense but drifted toward describing a poor or messy condition.
