Etymology

Odihnă entered Romanian from a Slavic source related to the verb meaning to breathe or catch one's breath, the same root that gives Russian its word for rest. Old Church Slavonic speakers used a prefixed form of this breathing verb to describe pausing to recover, and Romanian borrowed the resulting noun during centuries of close contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors. Romanian absorbed many such Slavic words for everyday and social life, and odihnă became the standard word for rest.
