Etymology

Exercițiu comes from Latin exercitium, an abstract noun built on exercere, meaning to keep busy or train. Exercere itself is ex- (out, thoroughly) plus arcere (to enclose or hold back). Romanian took the word in during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize its vocabulary, alongside the parallel French borrowing exercice. That same period gave Romanian the verb a exersa, a doublet route into the same root.
