Etymology
Romanian borrowed junglă from French jungle in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that shaped modern Romanian vocabulary. French jungle came from English jungle, which in turn came from Hindi jangal, meaning wasteland or forest, itself from Sanskrit jangala, meaning arid or sparsely wooded land. The word shifted meaning as it moved through English and French, coming to denote dense tropical forest rather than dry scrubland.
