Etymology

The word came into Romanian from Ottoman Turkish maymun, which itself derives from Arabic maymūn, meaning fortunate or blessed. This was a superstitious euphemism, since some cultures avoided naming the animal directly. The term spread across the Balkans under Ottoman influence, and Romanian attached a native feminine noun suffix to the borrowed root to form maimuță.
