Iertă is the third person singular simple past of the verb a ierta, to forgive. The verb comes from Latin libertare, to free or liberate, a derivative of liber, free. Over centuries the sense shifted from freeing someone physically to releasing them from blame or debt, which is how forgiveness works in most languages.
