Etymology
Romanian borrowed "diamant" from French "diamant" in the modern era, part of the wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. French inherited the word from Latin "diamas, diamantem", itself an alteration of Greek "adamas" (unbreakable, untamed), the same source behind English "adamant". The Greek word was formed from a negative prefix plus a verb meaning "to tame" or "subdue", so a diamond was literally something that could not be tamed or broken.
