Etymology
Farmec entered Romanian from Old Church Slavonic farmakŭ, which was itself borrowed from Ancient Greek phármakon, a word covering drug, poison, remedy, and magic potion. As the word passed into Romanian, its meaning settled on magic spell and, later, the softer sense of personal or aesthetic charm. The same Greek root, through a separate and later route, gave English pharmacy and pharmacology.
