Etymology
Vârstă comes from Latin vertere, meaning to turn. The link is the idea of years turning over, one after another, which gave rise to a noun for a stage of life. Romanian kept this inherited Latin word while other Romance languages built their word for age on a different root (Latin aetas gave French âge and Italian età).
