Etymology

Fază came into Romanian from French phase in the 19th century, part of a wave of French borrowings that modernized Romanian scientific and technical vocabulary. French phase goes back to Greek phasis, meaning appearance or the showing of a star or the moon. That Greek noun derives from the verb phainein, to show or bring to light.
