Etymology

Fetiță is built from fată, the ordinary Romanian word for girl, plus the diminutive suffix -iță. The root vowel shifts from a to e before the suffix, a regular sound change found in other Romanian diminutives. The origin of fată itself is disputed; most dictionaries call it a native word of the region rather than one inherited straight from Latin, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root can be given.
