The origin of fluture is not settled. Romanian shares this word closely with Albanian flutur, meaning butterfly, and linguists cite this as possible evidence of a shared substrate language spoken in the Balkans before Latin arrived there. Unlike most core Romanian vocabulary, it does not come cleanly from Latin, and no secure Indo-European root has been established. Some scholars link it to the Romanian verb a flutura, to flap or wave, suggesting an origin that imitates the motion of fluttering wings.
