Etymology

Romanian borrowed "front" from French "front" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The French word descends from Latin "frons, frontis", meaning forehead or brow, which extended to mean the foremost part of anything, including an army's leading edge. The military sense of a battle line is the oldest use in Romanian; the weather and political senses came later by analogy.
