Etymology
Romanian borrowed "start" directly from English in the late 19th or early 20th century, along with a wave of sports vocabulary. English "start" itself comes from Old English "styrtan", meaning to leap up or jump, a Germanic verb. Romanian kept both the spelling and the pronunciation close to the English source, unlike most of its inherited Latin vocabulary.
