Etymology

Acuzați is the masculine plural of acuzat, the past participle of the verb a acuza, "to accuse". Romanian took this verb from Latin accusare during the nineteenth century, a period when Romanian scholars deliberately imported Latin and French vocabulary to replace or supplement older Slavic-derived legal terms. Accusare itself was built from ad- ("toward") and causa ("cause, legal case"), so the underlying sense is "to bring a case against someone".
