Etymology
The word is onomatopoeic: it simply spells out the sound of a laugh, usually a stifled, sly, or mocking one. Romanian has a small family of such laughter interjections, including the plain "ha" and the throatier "hî". Because it arose by direct imitation of sound rather than by descent from an inherited word, it does not trace back to a Proto-Indo-European root.
