The word comes from French conférence, which goes back to the Latin conferentia, a noun built on conferre, meaning to bring together or confer. Latin conferre itself joins the prefix com- (together) with ferre (to carry). Romanian borrowed the French form during the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French-derived vocabulary for institutions and public life.
