Etymology
Funcționa entered Romanian in the 19th century through French fonctionner, part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The root goes back to Latin functio, meaning performance or execution, itself from the verb fungi, to perform or discharge a duty. The Romanian infinitive ending -a was added to fit the first conjugation.
